Investigation Launched After Israeli Strikes on Gaza Hospital
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that authorities are investigating reports of airstrikes hitting a hospital in southern Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, including five journalists.
Netanyahu expressed sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that Israel does not aim to harm civilians during its operations against Hamas. The tragic event took place at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where multiple sources reported that artillery rounds caused significant destruction.
The Prime Minister’s office stated, “Israel deeply regrets the tragic mishap at Nasser Hospital. We value the safety of journalists and medical personnel. Our military is looking into the situation thoroughly. Our mission remains focused on combating Hamas and ensuring the safety of our hostages.”
Reports indicate that airstrikes targeted Hamas infrastructure, specifically pointing to a surveillance camera on the hospital’s roof. Tragically, the first strike claimed the life of a cameraman, while the second strike took place shortly after, hitting first responders and additional journalists.
Brigadier General Effie Defrin of the Israeli Defense Forces reaffirmed the commitment to minimize civilian casualties while addressing the complexities of the conflict with Hamas. He stated, “Hamas uses civilian facilities as shields, creating dangerous conditions for all.”
The journalists lost in the strikes included freelancers from multiple news organizations, emphasizing the risks media professionals face in conflict zones. Defrin assured that Israel would adhere to international standards in their ongoing investigation.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of reporting in active war zones, particularly with groups that exploit civilian areas for their operations. The investigation continues as the situation unfolds.
