Trump Secures South Caucasus Pact, Excluding Iran from Vital Trade Route

New U.S. Deal in the South Caucasus Aims to Resolve Longstanding Conflict

In a significant development, President Donald Trump has brokered a deal in the South Caucasus that is set to bring an end to a decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Experts suggest this agreement not only secures the U.S. a strategic foothold near Iran but also opens a critical trade route to Europe.

The recent agreement, signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, grants the United States a 99-year lease on the Zangezur Corridor. This crucial strip of land will enable trade and energy transport while completely bypassing Iran. Banafsheh Zand, an Iranian-American journalist and dissident, referred to the arrangement as a “wonderful gain for the U.S.,” adding that it also sends a “slap in the face” to the Iranian regime.

The Zangezur Corridor has historically been a focal point in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which has caused significant instability and displaced tens of thousands of people over the past thirty years. Trump’s mediation has led both nations to engage in dialogue and has established a new trade and security network connecting the Caspian region with Europe.

Balancing Iran’s Influence

Following this peace deal, leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan are looking to address concerns from both Russia and Iran. Many see the corridor as a potential game changer that could provide allies with safer and cheaper access to Caspian energy sources while minimizing Iran’s economic influence.

Zand emphasized the importance of U.S. oversight in facilitating the flow of energy resources. Under this new plan, American companies will be involved in managing railways, roads, and energy pipelines within the corridor, significantly enhancing U.S. trade and investment opportunities. This move has the potential to reshape Europe’s energy supply and lessen its reliance on both Russia and Iran.

Experts are highlighting that this outcome represents a significant loss for Iran, as it strips the country of its previous leverage over energy and trade routes in the region. Zand described the corridor as a strategic encirclement for Iran, likening it to a cat that has been cornered.

New Dynamics in Regional Geopolitics

The implications of this corridor are substantial. According to Behnam Ben Taleblu from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, it highlights Iran’s decreasing influence in the region. The conflicts and political tensions exacerbated by recent events have left Iran vulnerable, complicating its traditional ties with Armenia.

Zand believes that Trump’s direct involvement is a game changer, asserting that the U.S. presence will not only enhance trade but could open doors for potential military bases in the area, further cementing U.S. influence.

This historic deal, supported by NATO, is being likened to past peace accords that have changed the geopolitical landscape. Zand expressed hope that this corridor is a sign that the Iranian regime’s time is limited, showing that it is increasingly isolated from regional power dynamics.

Conclusion

The agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with U.S. brokerage, sets in motion new dynamics that could reshape relations in the South Caucasus. Analysts are watching closely as the region adjusts to a new reality, with potential benefits for all involved – except for Iran, which may find itself increasingly sidelined in the years to come.
