Israel Challenges UN’s Gaza Aid Figures While US-Supported GHF Nourishes Millions

Aid Delivery Challenges in Gaza Highlighted as Tensions Rise

As discussions about aid delivery to Gaza intensify, Israeli authorities are raising concerns about the United Nations’ reports, especially regarding the interception of aid and the actual number of trucks reaching their destinations.

According to figures from the U.N. Office for Project Services, from May 19 to August 12, over 3,140 trucks were intercepted before they could distribute aid. Shockingly, only about 412 trucks—roughly 11.6% of the total—successfully delivered aid. The U.N. attributed this interference to both desperate civilians and armed groups.

On Tuesday, the Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announced that their assessments show the UN data is incomplete. They claim that about 6,000 additional trucks entered Gaza since May, noting that Israel has permitted around 9,200 trucks to deliver aid in the last three months—more than double the U.N. count.

COGAT stated, “The U.N. only shows part of the aid actually delivered, misleading the international community and affecting global media narratives and decision-making regarding Gaza’s humanitarian situation.”

In contrast, the U.S.-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has reportedly succeeded in its aid delivery efforts without facing significant theft or looting. The GHF asserts that they provide between one and two million meals daily, relying on armed guards to ensure safety.

Chapin Fay, a GHF spokesperson, emphasized the need for security in delivering aid effectively, arguing, “This is not the militarization of aid… it’s about ensuring food reaches those in need.” He mentioned that over 200 international organizations are now advocating for collaboration with the GHF.

Visiting the Kerem Shalom crossing, Fay observed mountains of U.N. aid sitting unused, with supplies like flour and medical items spoiling due to lack of distribution. He shared that drivers waiting to deliver aid expressed fear for their safety after being shot at while trying to enter Gaza.

A spokesperson from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) highlighted that the use of armed escorts could raise concerns about the neutrality and safety of humanitarian workers, advocating for their use only in dire situations.

Amid these discussions, there are reports of Hamas diverting aid. A U.S. State Department assessment highlights ongoing investigations into claims that Hamas is systematically interfering with aid deliveries. While the U.N. claims to monitor aid transfers, evidence suggests aid is still being repurposed by armed groups.

An Israeli official noted that looting can be attributed to communities and armed groups, complicating the assessment of aid stolen by Hamas, which operates without clear identification.

Recent videos from COGAT showcased Hamas looting aid, raising alarms about their disregard for the population’s needs. Despite these incidents, the U.N. maintains they have strict oversight on aid deliveries, but the situation remains complex.

Experts argue that Hamas’ actions in obstructing aid violate international laws meant to protect civilians. This ongoing crisis continues to generate concern as humanitarian needs in Gaza grow, underscoring the challenges of delivering aid effectively amidst rising tensions and conflicts.
