North Korea Boosts Nuclear Arsenal in Response to U.S.-South Korea Drills
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has urged his country to rapidly expand its nuclear weapons stockpile in light of recent military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea. According to North Korean state media, Kim characterized these drills as a clear provocation, labeling them “an obvious expression of their will to provoke war.”
The joint military operations, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, began this week and are expected to continue intermittently until September. Kim argues that such actions signify the U.S. and South Korea’s intentions to maintain a hostile stance towards North Korea, prompting the need for an aggressive nuclear buildup.
Hong Min, a North Korea analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, noted that this move indicates North Korea’s refusal to pursue denuclearization and its determination to enhance its nuclear capabilities.
Tensions have escalated shortly after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced efforts to de-escalate military activities along the North-South border. This includes plans to revive a 2018 military agreement aimed at reducing hostilities.
The 2018 pact had led to significant military reductions, including buffer zones and no-fly areas to prevent clashes. However, the agreement suffered setbacks as tensions increased between the two nations.
As part of the ongoing efforts to soften relations, South Korea has also removed loudspeakers from the border that broadcast messages against North Korea, a gesture reciprocated by Pyongyang.
President Lee indicated that his administration aims for gradual steps to restore the September 19 Military Agreement and expressed hope that North Korea would join in efforts to rebuild trust and open channels for dialogue.
