Elon Musk and Apple: A Legal Tussle Over App Store Practices
Elon Musk, the founder of xAI, has recently raised concerns about Apple’s practices with its App Store. He accused Apple of supporting certain apps over others, particularly claiming favoritism towards OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk suggests that this creates an unfair advantage in the highly competitive world of apps, and has hinted at possible legal action against Apple for what he describes as an “antitrust violation.”
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed his belief that Apple is making it nearly impossible for other AI companies to succeed in the App Store. He emphasized that his concerns are serious enough to consider taking Apple to court.
In response, Apple stated that the App Store is designed to be fair for all developers. A spokesperson said that app rankings are determined based on quality and user experience, rather than any political influence or favoritism. They emphasized their commitment to providing a level playing field for all app developers.
Musk has also pointed out that his own apps, X and Grok, were not featured in Apple’s “Must-Have” section, despite their popularity. He claims this exclusion further demonstrates Apple’s bias in app promotion.
Recently, Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its devices, a move that Musk believes contributes to the issues he’s raised. While he has leveled serious accusations against Apple, he has yet to back his claims with concrete evidence apart from his social media remarks.
As tensions rise between these tech giants, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and whether Musk will follow through with his threat of legal action.
