PT Usha Supports National Sports Governance Bill

On Tuesday, PT Usha, the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), showed strong support for the National Sports Governance Bill. She believes this legislation will change the long-standing issues in sports management in India by promoting transparency and accountability.

During a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Usha highlighted key features of the bill, which was approved by the Lok Sabha the previous day. One significant aspect is the establishment of a National Sports Board (NSB), which will have significant authority to recognize National Sports Federations (NSFs). To access government funding, these federations will need to affiliate with the NSB.

The proposed bill also aims to create a National Sports Tribunal to resolve disputes in sports and a National Sports Election Panel to oversee elections within the federations. Usha expressed her excitement, saying this was a moment she had been waiting for, and it held great importance for both her personally and for the nation.

Last year, Usha had expressed concerns about the bill, fearing it represented government overreach that could risk a ban from the International Olympic Committee. However, after talking with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, she has changed her perspective.

Reflecting on her own journey, Usha recounted a pivotal moment from 1984 when she narrowly missed winning an Olympic medal. She spoke of how, for many years, there was no solid sports law to support athletes’ dreams. Now, she feels hopeful that this new legislation will finally bring about necessary changes.

“This bill will foster transparency, fairness, and equality for all athletes,” she stated. It aims to boost the confidence of both athletes and sponsors, ensuring that justice and fair play prevail in sports.

Usha also pointed out the bill’s significance in India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. She described it as not just a piece of legislation but a significant step towards fulfilling India’s dreams in the world of sports.

“This legislation is a promise—an assurance that athletes will not be let down by an indifferent system,” she added, sharing her personal experience of running barefoot on clay tracks and how she believes this bill can transform lives.

Furthermore, Usha expressed her support for the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, which aims to strengthen the autonomy of the National Anti-Doping Agency and establish an advisory board for anti-doping practices. She emphasized that such laws are essential for fostering a new culture of clean sports, guiding athletes towards a brighter path.

In conclusion, PT Usha’s passionate endorsement of the National Sports Governance Bill highlights a significant moment for Indian sports, paving the way for progress and reform.
