India Confident About Asian Games Accommodation
India’s deputy chef-de-mission, A Sharath Kamal, is optimistic that the accommodation set-up for athletes at the Asian Games will not pose significant challenges. With athletes staying in a mix of containers, a cruise ship, and hotels, Sharath believes the Indian team is well-prepared.
A Strong Contingent
India will have a large representation at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with 501 athletes and 265 officials making the trip. Athletes will be housed in different types of accommodations, and Sharath mentioned that they have been briefed on what to expect. He believes they will quickly adjust to their surroundings.
“To help them prepare, we’ve set up some containers at various Sports Authority of India (SAI) campuses. This gives the athletes a preview of what it’s like to stay in containers,” Sharath explained. “We’ve also tried to create a similar experience with the cruise ship arrangements.”
He is confident that the players are well-informed and will adapt smoothly to their accommodations.
Cruise Ship and Containers for Athletes
About 4,000 to 5,000 athletes will reside on the Costa Serena, a cruise ship docked at Nagoya Port. Additionally, around 2,000 athletes will stay in modified shipping containers at Garden Pier in Nagoya Bay. The remaining participants will be housed in commercial hotels located near competition venues throughout Aichi prefecture, with some events also occurring in Tokyo.
Concerns About Accommodation
However, the use of shipping containers instead of a conventional athletes’ village has raised some eyebrows among participating nations. The South Korean team, for instance, has expressed concerns regarding the confined living spaces. Members of the Asian Cricket Council have also voiced questions about the accommodation arrangements.
Indian athletes, on the other hand, are somewhat familiar with these conditions. The Sports Authority of India has organized stays in container facilities prior to their journey to Japan, allowing athletes to adapt ahead of time.
Sharath noted that officials may have a tougher time adjusting, as they did not have the same kind of preparation that the athletes experienced.
Despite the accommodation concerns, Sharath highlighted that the focus should remain on performance and competition rather than the living conditions.
Aiming for Medals
India approaches the Games with several top athletes in various sports. Olympic champions like Manu Bhaker, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, and Neeraj Chopra are expected to shine, while the country’s hockey and cricket teams aim for strong competitions.
Key sports for India’s medal hopes include shooting, athletics, archery, badminton, wrestling, and weightlifting. The country’s goal is to build on its record of 107 medals from the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are set to take place from September 19 to October 4, featuring competitions at various venues across Aichi prefecture and nearby areas.
