Anthropic to Offer AI Model to US Government for $1
In a recent announcement, Anthropic, backed by Amazon, revealed that it will provide its AI model, Claude, to the US government for a symbolic fee of just $1 per agency. This initiative aims to give federal institutions access to advanced and reliable AI technologies as the government expands its list of approved AI vendors, which already includes competitors like OpenAI and Google.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, emphasized the importance of this step for the US’s leadership in AI. He stated, “We want federal employees to harness AI effectively to serve the American public better.” By making this service affordable, Anthropic hopes to eliminate financial barriers and empower government workers with the same high-quality AI tools used in private sectors.
In addition to Claude for Government, which is designed for secure, sensitive tasks, Anthropic also offers Claude for Enterprise.
OpenAI Follows Suit
This move comes shortly after OpenAI announced a similar offer, allowing federal agencies to use its ChatGPT for just $1 per agency annually. According to OpenAI, this collaboration with the US General Services Administration aims to enhance productivity within the federal workforce. CEO Sam Altman confirmed this initiative, stating, “We are providing ChatGPT access to the entire federal workforce!”
Both companies are positioning these low-cost offerings as methods to boost government efficiency, aligning with past efforts by the Trump Administration on AI development. OpenAI reported that federal employees using ChatGPT have saved an average of 95 minutes per day, with a significant portion of users sharing a positive experience.
