Israeli Prime Minister Expands Gaza Operation Plans
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the country’s military plans for Gaza have grown larger than initially thought. On Monday, he stated that Israel “must finish the job” and defeat Hamas completely. This follows a previous announcement made last Friday regarding a military takeover of the area.
Netanyahu clarified that the operations will now cover not just Gaza City, but also other regions, including the “central camps” and Muwasi, where more than 500,000 people live. He mentioned discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing gratitude for America’s ongoing support.
“Our aim is not to occupy Gaza but to liberate it,” Netanyahu said. His government aims to eradicate Hamas from Gaza and establish a stable environment before eventually turning control over to supportive Arab forces.
The Israeli Security Cabinet had earlier approved a plan outlining five main goals: disarming Hamas, ensuring the return of all hostages, demilitarizing Gaza, retaining security control in the area, and setting up a new civilian administration free from Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
As part of this operation, Defense Minister Israel Katz has received authorization to call up more than 400,000 military reservists to assist with the effort until the end of November.
Amid this escalation, several of Israel’s allies have expressed support for recognizing a Palestinian state. Recently, countries like France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have announced intentions to take this step.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, “Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to have their own state.” He emphasized the importance of demilitarizing Gaza and noted that Hamas should have no role in a future Palestinian government. Albanese also condemned the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for the return of Israeli hostages.
Critics have warned that recognizing a Palestinian state at this time may complicate future peace negotiations. Prime Minister Albanese remarked that a two-state solution is essential to end the ongoing violence and suffering.
The U.S. continues to stand by Israel at the United Nations, despite criticisms from other countries. Countries like China and Russia have condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, accusing it of collective punishment and heightening hostilities.
