Israel’s Security Cabinet Approves Measures Against Hamas
In the early hours of Thursday, Israel’s security cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy to combat Hamas. This comes after the militant group disrupted crucial U.S.-led negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution.
The primary concern now is understanding Hamas’ long-term goals and whether they can truly be defeated. Jonathan Conricus, a former spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), noted that Hamas is a faction of the Muslim Brotherhood, driven by a radical agenda focused on eliminating the State of Israel. He emphasized that their recent attacks, particularly the one on October 7, were planned to achieve their objective of overpowering Israel and asserting control over the region.
Netanyahu’s Commitment to Gaza
Netanyahu has confirmed that Israel plans to take control of Gaza to “liberate” its people from Hamas. According to experts, Hamas employs calculated and strategic tactics rather than acting recklessly. For instance, they have orchestrated a “starvation” campaign, successfully applying international pressure on Israel, leading to temporary pauses in military actions and humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza.
Recently, leaders from France, the UK, and Canada expressed intentions to recognize Palestine as a state, which the Israeli government criticized, calling it a reward for terrorism. A senior Hamas official, Ghazi Hamad, mentioned in an interview that this recognition by several countries is a direct outcome of their actions on October 7.
Conricus warned that such international recognition has strengthened Hamas’ resolve, making them less likely to negotiate or compromise, which directly impacts Israeli hostages still in captivity.
Stalled U.S.-Mediated Negotiations
Negotiations mediated by the U.S. to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of remaining hostages have hit a deadlock. U.S. officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, have suggested alternative strategies, citing Hamas’s unwillingness to negotiate in good faith.
Khaled Abu Toameh, a Palestinian affairs analyst, indicates that Hamas aims to prevent Israel from achieving its goals, particularly regarding the removal of the group from power. He believes that Hamas feels it has reached a crucial moment where it cannot back down, expecting international pressure to focus on Israel as casualties mount.
Hamas’ long-term strategy, according to Abu Toameh, is to ensure its survival and continue its struggle against Israel. He argued that the conflict is part of a broader agenda that has persisted since Hamas’ founding, with their charter explicitly stating the need for their land to be liberated through continued struggle.
Experts urge that the best way to understand Hamas is through its founding principles, which outline an ongoing “struggle against Jews” as a vital and serious endeavor, calling for united efforts until their aims are achieved.
