AI Startup Offers Buyouts to New Employees Post-Acquisition
Cognition, an artificial intelligence startup, is extending voluntary buyout offers to approximately 200 employees from Windsurf, a developer tools company it recently acquired. This buyout comes with a severance package that equals nine months of salary for those who decide to leave. The move is part of Cognition’s strategy to quickly integrate Windsurf’s technology and clients while retaining employees who fit well with Cognition’s culture.
Cognition’s CEO, Scott Wu, has been transparent about the expectations from the new team members. In a recent internal email, he emphasized the company’s commitment to a strong work ethic. Wu remarked, “We don’t believe in work-life balance—building the future of software engineering requires a deep dedication that combines both work and life.” He acknowledged that many who joined Windsurf may not be prepared for the demands at Cognition, which often includes six-day workweeks and over 80-hour work weeks.
Wu framed the buyout as a fair option for employees who may not be comfortable with the level of commitment expected at Cognition. The decision is aimed at allowing a respectful exit for those who do not wish to continue after the acquisition. The offer, which is available until August 10, follows recent layoffs affecting about 30 Windsurf staff.
This move reflects Cognition’s plan to create a more streamlined team focused on its evolving goals. The acquisition of Windsurf aligns with significant changes in the company, including a failed $3 billion deal with OpenAI, which fell through due to concerns regarding intellectual property rights. Shortly afterward, Google hired Windsurf’s CEO and key team members for its DeepMind division, leading to Cognition’s acquisition of Windsurf’s remaining assets.
By providing this voluntary exit option, Cognition is aiming to build a cohesive team that is fully aligned with its mission and vision.
