Karun Nair Shines on Day 1 of 5th Test Against England
Indian batsman Karun Nair marked a significant moment in his career, scoring his first half-century in eight years during the first day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. Despite previous struggles in the series, Nair stepped up when it mattered most, helping India recover on a challenging pitch under gloomy skies.
Nair finished the day unbeaten on 52 runs off 98 balls, including seven boundaries. His solid performance was key as India ended the day at 204 for 6 after being put in to bat first.
Before this match, Nair’s recent form hadn’t been impressive, with just 131 runs across six innings, averaging 21.83. His best score had been 40, and although he scored 30 and 41 in earlier Tests, he hadn’t been able to convert those starts into significant scores. Nevertheless, the team management continued to back him, selecting him to replace Shardul Thakur.
This knock marked only the second half-century of Nair’s career, coming 11 innings after his remarkable triple century against England in Chennai back in 2016. After the day’s play, India’s assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate expressed his appreciation for Nair’s performance, noting how he maintained his rhythm despite moving up and down the batting order.
“Karun has faced a tough challenge on this tour, batting at different positions. Despite the changes, he has shown great composure and absorbed the pressure well,” Ten Doeschate said.
With Nair set to continue his innings alongside Washington Sundar on Day 2, he will be eager to build on this momentum and aim for a century, marking a strong comeback in his professional journey.
