Couple’s Bike Ride Turns Dangerous as Grizzly Bears Attack
A seemingly calm afternoon bike ride turned alarming for a couple in Canada when they unexpectedly encountered two grizzly bears. This incident occurred on Saturday around 4:30 p.m. while they were riding e-bikes near the Kootenay River.
Local authorities believe that quick actions by the woman likely saved both their lives. As the bears charged at them, she managed to grab her bear spray and successfully deterred the animals. Reports state that the couple startled the bears, leading to the frightening encounter.
The woman recounted hearing her husband shout just moments before she saw a bear lunging towards her. In the chaos, she noticed another bear attacking her husband. Thanks to her prompt use of bear spray, both bears retreated.
After the attack, emergency responders took the husband to a hospital, where he received treatment for serious injuries. Thankfully, he is expected to recover.
Authorities praised the couple for being well-prepared. Inspector Dave Webster from the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service noted, “They had bear spray readily available and knew how to use it. Others in bear territory should take similar precautions.”
Following the incident, officials investigated the area and consulted wildlife experts, who concluded that the bears were likely acting defensively. It appears that the couple caught them off guard while traveling through dense vegetation.
While officers searched the area for the bears, they found no signs of the animals and closed three main trails as a precaution. Wildlife officials decided not to pursue the bears, emphasizing that they were likely just defending themselves.
Officials reiterated the importance of bear spray as a vital safety tool for anyone traveling in wildlife areas. They recommend treating it like a seatbelt—essential for protection in unpredictable environments.
