Filmmaker Aanand L Rai has voiced strong objections against Eros International regarding the re-release of his 2013 film Raanjhanaa. The film returned to theaters on February 28, featuring an altered climax that was reportedly created using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Rai, who directed the original version with Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, has made it clear that he does not support this new edition.
In his statement, Rai expressed disappointment over not being consulted about the edits. He emphasized that viewers loved Raanjhanaa for its unique flaws and strengths, and changing the ending without discussion feels like a betrayal of both the film and its devoted fans.
The director criticized Eros International’s decision as “reckless,” pointing out the ethical and legal issues it raises. He warned that such actions could set a troubling precedent for the film industry. “They’re opening a dangerous door,” he said, questioning how decisions like these might affect the rights of creators.
A major concern for Rai is the alteration of the actors’ performances without their consent. He remarked, “How can they digitally change an actor’s work nearly a decade later? This undermines their rights and raises serious issues about personal image and agency.”
Rai expressed sadness over the direction the industry is heading, where the original intent behind creative works seems to be undervalued. He said, “If we allow this to happen, it could lead to any film being modified for quick profit, reducing art to something easily discarded.”
As for now, Eros International has not responded to Rai’s criticisms.
