Animesh Kujur Misses Podium at Monaco Diamond League by Slim Margin
India’s fastest runner, Animesh Kujur, narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Monaco Diamond League. Competing in the men’s U23 200m final, he finished in fourth place with a time of 20.55 seconds, just 0.13 seconds shy of a medal and below his personal best of 20.32 seconds.
The race was challenging for Animesh due to a significant headwind of -1.9 m/s, which affected his performance. The gold medal was claimed by Australian sensation Gout Gout, who finished in 20.10 seconds, slightly off his personal best of 20.02 seconds. Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi took home the silver, while South Africa’s Jack Naeem secured the bronze with a time of 20.42 seconds, just ahead of Kujur.
Recently, Animesh made headlines by breaking the 100m national record with an impressive time of 10.18 seconds at the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting in Greece. This achievement makes him the first Indian to run the 100m in under 10.20 seconds, surpassing Gurindervir Singh’s previous record of 10.20 seconds in Vari, near Athens.
Currently, Animesh holds national records in both the 100m and 200m events. Earlier this year, he clocked 20.32 seconds in the men’s 200m final at the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea, breaking his own record of 20.40 seconds set during the Federation Cup.
