Health Minister to Receive Report on Medical Aid Discrimination
Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi is about to get an important report regarding claims of racial bias against black healthcare providers by certain medical aid companies in South Africa. This follows a complaint made in 2019 by the National Health Care Professional Association and Solutionist Thinkers, who argued that medical schemes were unfairly denying claims based on race and ethnicity. In light of this, Motsoaledi instructed the Council for Medical Schemes to carry out an independent investigation led by Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi. After reviewing the findings, the minister plans to inform the media.
Cape Town Program Aims to Boost Literacy During Holidays
In Cape Town, some orphaned children are continuing their education during the school holidays through local initiatives focused on improving reading skills. As schools are closed, youth centers and orphanages have noticed a concerning drop in literacy rates. A report set to be completed by 2030 revealed that only 20% of Grade 3 students meet the necessary reading standards. One initiative, led by junior City Council speaker Mizero Hope Munyandekwe, organizes group reading sessions for kids aged 5 to 12. These sessions include reading out loud, discussions, writing reviews, and even drawing activities to foster confidence and communication abilities.
Search Underway for Missing Fisherman Following Shark Incident
A 37-year-old fisherman is currently missing after a possible shark attack at Mfazazana, located on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. He was one of three fishermen who were in the water when he vanished after a shark was spotted close by. A friend attempted to help but had to retreat as two sharks came near. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) suspects the sharks were feeding on sardines. Police and search teams, including a K9 unit, are actively searching for the missing man and have launched an investigation into the incident.
