THE HAGUE: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made it clear that Iran should not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, especially as tensions between Israel and Iran escalated with new strikes on Monday.
Rutte expressed his deep concern about the possibility of Tehran acquiring a nuclear bomb, stating that it could create a dangerous situation, giving Iran a tight grip over both Israel and the world.
Before the NATO summit set to begin on Tuesday, he reiterated that all NATO allies are united in their stance against Iran developing nuclear capabilities. Rutte also commented on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, saying that it should not distract from the summit of the 32 NATO leaders.
He highlighted Iran’s significant involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that Iranian drones pose a daily threat to innocent lives in Ukrainian cities.
Over the weekend, former President Donald Trump claimed that US military aircraft had successfully targeted sites in Iran, using powerful “bunker buster” bombs to destroy some of its nuclear facilities. However, other officials cautioned that it is too early to determine the lasting effects on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which pose a serious concern for Israel and several Western nations.
