Neeraj Chopra celebrated a significant victory at the Paris Diamond League on June 20, 2025, marking his first title of the season. He secured the win with an impressive throw of 88.16 meters on his very first attempt, holding off the challenge from Germany’s Julian Weber.
While Neeraj only managed three valid throws, it proved enough for the win. Earlier this season, Weber had beaten Neeraj both in Doha and at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland. This victory was particularly special for Neeraj as it was his first Diamond League win since Lausanne 2023, making it his fifth overall, with previous wins including the Diamond League Final in Zurich in 2022.
This was Neeraj’s first return to Paris in eight years; his last appearance as a junior world champion saw him finishing fifth. Clearly eager to make a strong impression, Neeraj opened the event with his standout throw.
Paris Diamond League: Key Moments
The competition intensified as Weber pushed Neeraj throughout the event. Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott and Anderson Peters rounded out the top three, but it was evident that the competition boiled down to Neeraj and Weber.
Neeraj’s second attempt also yielded a solid 85.10 meters, while Weber could only manage 86.20 meters. Despite struggling with three consecutive foul throws afterward, Neeraj’s early throw set a challenging benchmark that Weber couldn’t surpass. Meanwhile, Walcott’s grip on the third spot slipped when Brazil’s Mauricio Luiz da Silva impressively broke the continental record with a throw of 86.20 meters.
As the evening progressed, changing weather conditions made things a bit tougher for the athletes. Despite the challenges, Weber kept pushing until the final attempt. Neeraj ended his last throw at 82.89 meters, while Weber finished with 81.08 meters, securing Neeraj’s victory. Da Silva finished in third place.
