India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill, recently shared his thoughts on what he has learned from playing under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As he prepares for the upcoming Test series against England, Gill sat down for an interview with Dinesh Karthik at Sky Sports, where he reflected on his experiences.
Gill praised Virat Kohli’s proactive style of captaincy. He noted that Kohli would quickly adapt and change strategies if something wasn’t working during the match. Additionally, Kohli made sure to communicate clearly with the bowlers about what he expected from them.
“When I played with Virat Bhai, I admired how he would think on his feet during Test matches. If a plan wasn’t working, he was quick to come up with a new one and explain it to the bowlers,” Gill shared.
When discussing Rohit Sharma’s approach, Gill emphasized that although Rohit might not appear aggressive at first, he is certainly strategic. Like Kohli, Rohit is very clear about his expectations.
“Rohit Bhai might seem calm, but he’s actually quite aggressive in his tactics. His communication before, during, and after matches is very straightforward,” Gill added.
Gill also talked about Rohit’s personality in the dressing room, noting that players understand his passionate demeanor. “Even if Rohit is tough on you, it’s not taken personally. It’s a sign of his commitment to improving the team,” he explained.
With both Sharma and Kohli stepping away from their roles, Gill is ready to take on this new challenge. He hopes to build on the lessons from his predecessors and lead the Test team to new successes.
