During a recent meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Shanghai Plus summits in Kyrgyzstan, Iranian President Alireza Pezeshkian engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pezeshkian took a moment to thank India for its support and collaboration with Iran amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s commitment to seeking peace and stability, stating that his government has always preferred resolving disputes through dialogue rather than conflict. He criticized the US for choosing a path of violence and force, rather than diplomatic solutions.
He emphasized that Iran does not seek war and believes that it is the government’s duty to ensure the safety and security of its people. Pezeshkian also noted that Iran has upheld its agreements, while the United States has not met its obligations. Despite this, he expressed a willingness to continue working towards mutual understanding and agreement.
Pezeshkian remarked, “Prolonging the war is not beneficial for us, the region, or humanity.” He argued that logic dictates the necessity to steer clear of war, pointing out that some groups in the US profit from ongoing conflicts. He urged for a collective move towards peace, stability, and dialogue.
Recognizing India’s significant cultural and historical connections with Iran, Pezeshkian urged Modi to leverage India’s relationships with various nations to promote peace and discourage conflict. He expressed that rational individuals globally desire harmony and that dialogue is the best path to address current challenges.
The Iranian president also conveyed Iran’s readiness to enhance bilateral relations with India across various fields, suggesting that increased cooperation could help mitigate the impact of sanctions. Despite obstacles posed by the US and Israel, he reaffirmed Tehran’s openness to strengthening ties with India.
In his response, Modi appreciated the opportunity to discuss these matters with Pezeshkian, noting India’s intent to maintain communication and cooperation with Iran through challenging times. He acknowledged Pezeshkian’s perspectives on peace and highlighted his potential role in promoting harmony.
Both leaders agreed on the need to counteract the interests of groups that thrive on conflict. They also discussed enhancing trade and transportation links between their countries, focusing on key areas like the Strait of Hormuz and the port of Chabahar. They concluded that strengthening economic ties and strategic cooperation would be crucial for the future relationship between Iran and India.
