Aiden Markram Hopes Test Cricket’s Popularity Will Grow After Historic Win
Aiden Markram, celebrated as the Player of the Match in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025, expressed his hope that South Africa’s recent victory will rekindle enthusiasm for Test cricket in the nation. After the team secured its first ICC trophy in 27 years, Markram emphasized the importance of keeping Test cricket at the forefront of South African cricket.
In recent years, interest in Test cricket had waned in South Africa. Among the teams in the World Test Championship, South Africa played the fewest matches, totaling just 12, which was on par with Bangladesh. In contrast, teams like Australia and India played 19 matches, while England played 22.
Markram shared his passion for the format, noting that he hopes young cricketers in South Africa will aspire to earn their Test caps. "Test cricket has always been my favorite," he said. "While players don’t always choose their format, it’s crucial to keep Test cricket as the main event in South Africa. It’s essential for young players to see playing Test cricket as a goal that they should strive for."
Coming into bat during a tense second innings, Markram faced pressure as South Africa aimed to chase down a challenging target of 282 runs—one that hadn’t been successfully chased at Lord’s in the past two decades. Markram was confident that the team’s performance would help answer many previous questions regarding their capabilities in ICC finals.
Reflecting on the moment after helping his team steer towards a historic win, Markram admitted he wished he could have savored the victory celebration more. "I would have loved to take in the standing ovation a bit longer," he said. "But I was disappointed with myself when I got out. Still, there are definitely some memories from this experience that I will cherish."
Published on June 14, 2025, this historic win marks a new chapter for South African cricket, and Markram’s hopes underscore the potential for a renewed passion for Test matches among fans and players alike.
