Webster Shines as Australia Takes Control in WTC Final Against South Africa
On June 11, during the first day of the World Test Championship final, Ricky Ponting praised Beau Webster for his impressive performance. Webster was the standout player for Australia, scoring 72 runs and helping the team reach a total of 212 in their first innings.
Webster came to bat at a difficult time, with Australia struggling at 67 for four after losing Travis Head just before lunch. He had a bit of fortune when South Africa chose not to review a dismissal that could have gone against him, and he made the most of his chance, scoring his runs off 92 balls.
Ponting remarked that Webster’s contributions were vital, stating, "Without those 70-odd runs, the scoreboard would look very different." He emphasized how ready Webster seemed during his innings.
Ponting also noted that Webster appears more at ease with his game lately. He appreciated Webster’s ability to maintain his natural playing style while trying to put pressure on the South African bowlers, even in tough situations. "Despite the falling wickets, Webster was able to play his game and keep the attack on the bowlers," Ponting commented.
As Day 1 came to a close, Australia found themselves in a strong position, leaving South Africa struggling at just 43 for 4.
