Cognizant CEO: AI Won’t Diminish Opportunities for Engineering Graduates – Here’s Why

Cognizant’s CEO Sees AI as an Opportunity for Graduates

Ravi Kumar, the CEO of Cognizant, is expressing a positive view about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on entry-level jobs. Rather than seeing AI as a threat to recent graduates, he believes it will create more job opportunities for them.

Leading a workforce of 350,000, Kumar shared his insights with Business Insider. He argues against the predictions made by other tech leaders, such as Dario Amodei from Anthropic, who anticipate a significant drop in entry-level jobs due to AI. “My argument is that we will actually need more freshers,” Kumar explained. He believes that as companies adopt AI, they will require more newcomers, and the need for specialized expertise will decrease.

Kumar thinks AI is different from previous technological advancements because it gives workers access to expertise, not just information. This idea has already shown results at Cognizant, where the productivity of less experienced developers has surged by 37% with the help of AI tools, compared to a 17% increase for the most experienced developers.

"The use of AI is making it easier for junior developers to contribute effectively," he mentioned. As AI tools become widely used, Kumar believes companies will require more junior talent to take on the increased workload.

However, not everyone in the tech field shares Kumar’s optimism. Klarna’s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, recently warned that AI could lead to job losses and possibly even a recession, as businesses look to streamline their workforce. His company cut its staff significantly due to productivity improvements driven by AI.

Kumar acknowledges that uncertainties exist. "I don’t know what’s the right answer," he said, but he is clear that the landscape of work is changing dramatically, and many different scenarios could unfold in this new era of AI.
