Government Denies Claims of Demonetisation in 2026

The Indian government has addressed recent rumors regarding the potential discontinuation of ₹500 banknotes, stating that these claims are false. The clarification came via the official social media fact-checking account, which emphasized that the misinformation was being spread through various platforms.

What Sparked the Rumors?

On June 3, 2025, a YouTube video from the channel ‘Capital TV’ claimed that India would stop circulating ₹500 notes starting March 2026. This video quickly gained traction on social media.

Government’s Response

In response, the government released a formal statement through PIBFactCheck, asserting that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any announcements regarding demonetisation. Officials reassured citizens that ₹500 notes are still in circulation and continue to be recognized as legal currency.

Staying Vigilant Against Misinformation

The government urged the public to be cautious of misleading news and to verify information through official channels like the RBI before accepting or sharing it. They emphasized the importance of relying on verified sources rather than social media rumors.

New ₹20 Banknotes on the Way

In related news, the RBI announced in May 2025 that it would introduce new ₹20 banknotes featuring the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The design of these new notes will be consistent with the existing Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, ensuring familiarity for the public.

The RBI also confirmed that all previous ₹20 banknotes issued will remain valid in India, reassuring citizens that there will be no changes to their legal tender status.
