Tom Haines Stars as England Lions Fight Back Against India A

On Saturday, May 31, Tom Haines played a brilliant innings, scoring a century that helped the England Lions make a strong comeback against India A. By the end of Day 2, the Lions stood at 237 for 2, after India A had put up an impressive total of 557 runs, led by Karun Nair’s exceptional score of 204.

Karun’s knock has significantly bolstered his chances of being selected for the Indian Test team, supported by solid contributions from Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 94 and 92 runs, respectively. After losing the vital wickets of Jurel and Sarfaraz, India pressed for quick runs. Despite the fall of Karun’s wicket, the lower order batsmen, including Harsh Dubey, Shardul Thakur, and Anhsul Kamboj, managed to add valuable runs, ensuring the team passed the 550-mark.

For the England Lions, bowlers Josh Hull and Zaman Akhter each took three wickets, while Eddie Jack claimed two.

India A started well with the ball when Kamboj dismissed Ben McKinney, but after that, finding wickets became challenging. Emilio Gay supported Haines well, enabling them to form a strong partnership worth over 100 runs for the third wicket. Unfortunately for India A, their fielding let them down with several dropped catches, giving Haines a couple of lucky breaks.

At one point, Haines edged a ball to second slip, but Sarfaraz was unable to grab it. Later, while on 83, he received another chance when Abhimanyu Easwaran barely missed a catch, allowing Haines to capitalize on these opportunities. Eventually, he brought up his 15th first-class century and his third this summer.

The England Lions maintained a good run rate, finishing the day at an average of 4.55, as the pitch became easier to bat on. The match will continue on Sunday, June 1, with Haines and Max Holden at the crease, scoring 103 and 64, respectively.
