Suneel Darshan experienced a wave of creativity following the unexpected success of his film Jaanwar in 1999. This action-filled emotional drama not only revitalized Akshay Kumar’s career but also marked a significant moment for Darshan as a director renowned for merging commercial elements with heartfelt storytelling. Riding this success, he began preparing for another story-driven action movie, again featuring Akshay in the lead role.
However, in early 2000, during a routine trip to Indore to oversee his distribution office, a spark of inspiration struck Suneel. The change of scenery reignited an old story idea that had been on his mind for years. A close associate of the filmmaker recalled, "It felt like something clicked in his head. He couldn’t push it aside any longer."
Upon returning to Mumbai, Suneel shared the new idea with his mother as he often did during creative dilemmas. She was deeply touched by the story and urged him to put his action project on hold, insisting this new tale had the potential for his growth both as a director and artist.
Next, Suneel approached Akshay Kumar, who surprisingly had a similar reaction. The story resonated with him, and he was on board immediately. While it was a departure from their usual collaborations, both felt it was the right direction.
The biggest surprise came when Suneel contacted Amitabh Bachchan, who had recently risen to prominence once again after Mohabbatein and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The legendary actor quickly agreed to join the project, impressed by the emotional depth and the rich character he would portray.
Thus, Rishta – A Bond of Love was born, set to be a multi-starrer that aimed to blend family drama with star power.
