Gujarat Titans’ Ishant Sharma Stresses Team Focus Beyond Single Match Ahead of Clash with Delhi Capitals
Gujarat Titans fast bowler Ishant Sharma has emphasized that his team is not just focused on their upcoming match against Delhi Capitals on May 18. While a victory would secure their spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs, Ishant highlighted the importance of treating every remaining game with equal seriousness in order to finish in the top two. This position offers significant benefits in the playoff structure.
Currently, Gujarat Titans sit second on the points table with 16 points from 11 games, showcasing strong performance throughout the season. In contrast, Delhi Capitals have struggled in the latter part of the tournament. Speaking at the Star Sports Press Room, Ishant reaffirmed that finishing among the top two is crucial for the team.
“I believe it’s not just one match that matters—every game is important,” Ishant said. “In a tournament like this, you have to fight hard for every two points. We’ve experienced matches where outcomes hinged on the last over or a critical wicket. So, I wouldn’t say this match is the only one that counts. Each game in the league phase is significant, especially if you’re aiming for a top finish.”
He continued, “You can’t just relax thinking you’ll make it to the qualifiers. If you think that way, you risk finishing in a lower position. Our team operates differently; we don’t let complacency creep in. We approach every game with full effort. If you leave the field thinking you could have given more, it means you didn’t put in your all. We always aim to walk off knowing we did our best.”
After the match against Delhi, Gujarat Titans will face Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings in home games. Securing a top-two finish would give them an advantage in the playoffs, allowing for a backup in Qualifier 2 if needed.
Ishant’s upcoming match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is particularly special for him, as he returns to his home ground in New Delhi. With fellow pacers Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj both showing good form, Gujarat’s bowling lineup aims to capitalize on the inconsistent batting lineup of Delhi Capitals, who still have the potential to turn games around quickly despite their struggles.
