Javed Akhtar: ‘I’d Pick Hell Over Pakistan’ Amid Operation Sindoor Tensions

Javed Akhtar’s Strong Words on Recent Tensions Between India and Pakistan

Famous lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar has made bold statements following the recent clash between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. At a book launch in Mumbai, he expressed a surprising sentiment, saying that if he had to choose between going to hell or the neighboring country, he would pick hell.

During his speech, Akhtar shared that he receives both praise and criticism from "extremists" on both sides of the border, although he didn’t specify what exactly those sides are. He mentioned how tough it can be to voice opinions that aim to represent everyone. "If I speak for just one side, I upset the other. But trying to please all leads to more backlash," he explained, while sharing some of the negative messages he gets through social media.

In a light-hearted yet serious tone, he noted, "On one hand, I’m called a ‘kaafir’ (non-believer) and told I’ll go to ‘jahannum’ (hell), while on the other, I’m labeled a ‘jihadi’ and told to go to Pakistan." He emphasized that if those were truly his only options, he’d rather choose hell. He also reflected on his journey, saying that his time in Mumbai has shaped who he is today.

Earlier this month, Akhtar also criticized claims from Pakistan that Kashmiris feel a bond with them. He stated, "That’s simply not true. When Pakistan attacked Kashmir after Independence, the local people resisted for three days. Our army only arrived later. The reality is that Kashmiris are an integral part of India, and most of them are loyal to the country."

His comments highlight the complexities of identity and loyalty in a region marked by ongoing conflict.
