Jannik Sinner Makes Strong Comeback at Italian Open 2025
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner marked his return to tennis in impressive fashion, defeating Argentina’s Mariano Navone in straight sets at the Italian Open on May 10, 2025. After just 1 hour and 38 minutes of play on Centre Court, Sinner secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory. This match was his first since a 104-day hiatus due to a doping ban following his triumph at the Australian Open.
Initially, Sinner faced some challenges, including a break point in the early stages of the first set. However, he quickly regained his composure, saving the break point and then taking control of the game. By the end of the first set, he was ahead 4-1, and he wrapped it up in just 43 minutes.
In the second set, Navone had another opportunity to break Sinner’s serve. Yet again, Sinner displayed his determination, leveling the score at 2-2. He seized a crucial break point later in the set, moving ahead 4-3 and never looked back.
Sinner expressed his joy after the match, saying, "It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve waited a long time for this moment, and I’m very happy to be back. It’s tough to gauge progress without matches, but that’s exactly what I need.” He acknowledged the importance of match play for his performance and was pleased with his win.
During the match, Sinner excelled on his second serves, winning 68% of those points. Though he made 24 unforced errors, he compensated with 21 winners, significantly outpacing Navone in that department.
Looking ahead, Sinner will face Jesper de Jong from the Netherlands in the Round of 32 after De Jong’s decisive win over Spain’s Alejandro Davidovic Fokina, finishing with a score of 6-0, 6-2.
