IPL Playoff Hopes: Can Rishabh Pant and LSG Keep Their Dreams Alive?

Lucknow Super Giants Look to Revive Playoff Hopes Despite Recent Setbacks

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant remains optimistic about his team’s chances of making it to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), even after suffering a 37-run defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS). LSG couldn’t chase down a target of 237 runs and ended with 199/7 in their 20 overs.

This loss marks LSG’s third in a row, dropping them to seventh place on the points table with five wins from 11 matches, totaling ten points. Despite the tough situation, Pant believes in his team’s ability to turn the tide in their last three matches.

"The dream is still alive. If we can win the next three matches, we can definitely make a comeback. We gave away too many runs, and dropping crucial catches at critical moments hurt us. We thought we’d be better, but we didn’t read the pitch correctly early on, which happens in cricket," Pant said during the post-match speech.

The challenge ahead is significant, as LSG is preparing to face a strong Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team next, followed by the Gujarat Titans (GT). They have two home matches remaining: one against RCB on May 9 and another versus Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 18, which will be their final league game.

Path to Playoffs for LSG

Compounding their difficulties, LSG has struggled at Ekana Stadium this season, winning only two out of five matches. To keep their playoff hopes alive, the team must win all remaining matches and do so by considerable margins to help improve their net run rate, which currently stands at -0.469.

Additionally, LSG will need to rely on the outcomes of matches played by other teams, as all top six teams have positive run rates, and the top four are expected to finish with over 16 points. With the odds stacked against them, LSG faces a tough fight ahead to create a comeback story in the remaining fixtures.
