Saikia’s visit on Sunday aims to discuss the rehabilitation and injury management processes with VVS Laxman, the Head of Cricket. Observers have noted that the CoE is beginning to resemble a medical facility rather than a center for high-performance training.
This visit is particularly significant as it marks two years since the CoE began operations. It also highlights the urgency of addressing the growing number of injured players. It’s not yet confirmed whether head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is currently in Sri Lanka, or chief selector Ajit Agarkar will participate in the meeting virtually.
Cricket journalist Kushan Sarkar emphasized the importance of this visit on social media, expressing hope that Saikia can openly address concerns about player fitness.
Current Injuries in the Team
The list of injured players is concerning, with key members undergoing rehabilitation. Notably, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is out due to knee swelling and will miss the ongoing tour in Sri Lanka. Other players unable to participate include B Sai Sudharsan (left toe injury), Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy (hamstring injuries), and Washington Sundar (quadriceps issue). Additionally, Akash Deep has been sidelined for an extended period due to a lower-back stress fracture.
Injuries are also affecting the white-ball squad, with Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Prince Yadav currently at the CoE. This situation has placed considerable strain on the Sports Science team, which has been operating without a permanent head since Nitin Patel resigned in early 2025.
Interim head Dhananjay Kaushik is currently managing the operations, but there are questions about the effectiveness of the rehabilitation timelines and whether consistent protocols are being followed for returning players to the field.
