Former Australian cricket captain Aaron Finch believes that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should focus on nurturing young talent in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite being five-time champions, CSK has struggled this season and became the first team eliminated from the playoffs.
The Super Kings began their campaign with a victory over the Mumbai Indians but have since lost eight out of their last nine matches. Currently, they sit at the bottom of the table with just four points and a net run rate of -1.211. Although they brought in promising players like Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and Dewald Brevis, they couldn’t secure a place in the playoffs.
Finch, who guided Australia to victory in the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, asserted that CSK can still take pride in trying to dent the chances of other teams hoping to qualify. He mentioned how the team is gathering insights on both their current players and upcoming talents.
“They’ve been open about assessing their squad and figuring out how to utilize players like Shivam Dube effectively. This knowledge will be invaluable for their future,” Finch remarked during an interview.
He further emphasized the importance of sticking with young players, stating, “They’ve come too far to turn back now. They just need to play for pride.”
CSK will next face Rajat Patidar’s team on Saturday, May 3, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This year marks the first time in IPL history that CSK will miss the playoffs for two consecutive seasons.
