US Vice President Urges Caution After Deadly Attack in Jammu and Kashmir
New Delhi: US Vice President JD Vance expressed concern following a tragic terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that left 26 people dead, including one foreign national. During an interview with Fox News, he emphasized the need for India to respond carefully to avoid escalating tensions in the region. Vance also called on Pakistan to assist in locating the terrorists responsible for the attack.
"Our hope is that India handles this situation in a way that doesn’t lead to a wider conflict," Vance stated. He added that he expected Pakistan to cooperate with India in tracking down the attackers who may be operating from their territory.
This incident occurred while Vance was visiting India with his family. In the days leading up to the attack, he had spoken with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his condolences and reaffirm the US commitment to standing by India in its fight against terrorism.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Vance said, "Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. Our thoughts and prayers are with those mourning this horrific event."
Prominent US leaders, including President Trump, have condemned the attack and expressed their support for India, stopping short of placing direct blame on Pakistan.
The assault took place in Baisaran Valley, often referred to as "Mini Switzerland," a popular tourist destination. Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as people scrambled for safety when gunfire erupted.
In response, Indian security forces have launched operations to apprehend the attackers. India has also taken measures against Pakistan by indefinitely suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and repatriating Pakistani nationals.
This attack marks one of the most significant terrorist incidents since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, raising fresh concerns about regional stability.
