Court Holds Back Ruling on Rana’s Family Communication Request

A Delhi court has postponed its decision regarding a plea from Tahawwur Rana, an important figure linked to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Rana is seeking the court’s permission to communicate with his family while he remains in custody.

The court session, led by special NIA judge Chander Jit Singh, included discussions from both sides behind closed doors. The judge is expected to announce the decision on Thursday.

Rana, represented by his lawyers from the Delhi State Legal Services Authority, argued that it is his fundamental right to maintain contact with his family, especially as they are concerned about his well-being in custody. He emphasized that, as a foreign national, he should have the right to communicate with loved ones.

On the other hand, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) opposed Rana’s request, stating that the investigation is at a sensitive stage. They raised concerns that allowing him to speak with his family could compromise the ongoing proceedings. NIA officials, along with the special public prosecutor Narender Mann, indicated that there is potential for Rana to disclose critical information during these communications.
