Gauri Khan’s Torii Hits Back at ‘Fake Paneer’ Claims: “Iodine Test Shows Starch, Not Authenticity”

Mumbai’s culinary scene caught attention this week when YouTuber Sarthak Sachdeva decided to put the authenticity of paneer to the test in several high-end restaurants owned by celebrities. His final location was Torii, an Asian fusion restaurant in Bandra run by Gauri Khan, wife of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.

In the video that gained widespread attention, Sarthak added iodine tincture to a piece of paneer at Torii. The paneer changed color, turning black, which some interpreted as a sign that starch was present—a common ingredient in low-quality paneer. This sparked a debate online, with many questioning the food quality at upscale restaurants.

In response, Torii quickly addressed the situation on their official Instagram and through a formal statement. They expressed surprise over the allegations of “fake paneer” and clarified that the iodine test indicates the presence of starch but does not determine paneer’s authenticity. They explained that such reactions are expected with dishes containing soy-based elements, which are prevalent in Asian cuisine. The restaurant emphasized their commitment to high standards in sourcing ingredients and preparation.

Additionally, Torii commented on the original video, reiterating their stance on the iodine test. They maintained that the reaction observed is tied to the presence of soy ingredients, assuring patrons of their paneer’s integrity.

The uproar from the video has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of such food tests and their accuracy in professional kitchens. Experts noted that iodine can react with starches in the sauces and thickeners commonly used in Asian dishes, which could lead to misunderstandings regarding ingredient quality. While Sarthak tested other celebrity-owned restaurants as well, Torii’s response stood out for its detailed explanation.
