India Pushes Back on Trump Tariffs Amidst Evolving US-India Relations, Says Congressman Krishnamoorthi

Indian-American Congressman Criticizes New Tariffs on India

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has voiced strong opposition to the recent tariffs imposed on India by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Congressman stated that these tariffs are putting unnecessary pressure on the relationship between the U.S. and India, especially at a time when their partnership is vital for addressing challenges from China.

In a statement released on Thursday, Krishnamoorthi described the tariffs as not only misdirected but also harmful to the economic, diplomatic, and security interests of the United States. He emphasized that the new 26 percent tariff on imports from India threatens to disrupt the important economic and security cooperation between the two democratic nations.

Krishnamoorthi pointed out that the U.S.-India relationship is increasingly crucial in promoting mutual prosperity and working together to counter the military and economic pressures from the Chinese government. He expressed concern that such tariffs would increase costs for American families while adding challenges for businesses in both countries.

The Congressman urged President Trump to reconsider these tariffs, highlighting the need to focus on the well-being of American families and strengthening the U.S.-India alliance during times of rising authoritarianism.

On Wednesday, President Trump announced the introduction of a 26 percent "discounted reciprocal tariff" on India, a move he claims is in response to India’s high tariffs on American goods, which he cited as being up to 52 percent. Displaying a chart during his announcement, Trump pointed out the various tariffs levied by countries like India, China, and those in the European Union.

Trump commented on India’s trade practices, saying, "India, very, very tough. The Prime Minister just left. He’s a great friend of mine, but I said, ‘You’re not treating us right.’” He expressed frustration over the imbalances he perceives in the trade relationship.

The executive order discussed in Trump’s announcement highlighted differences in tariff rates and pointed out that while the U.S. has one of the lowest average tariffs globally, many of its trading partners impose much higher rates on specific products.

After the tariffs were announced, Krishnamoorthi referred to them as an unfair tax that would increase financial burdens on working families. He argued that these policies would isolate the U.S. internationally and harm its alliances while benefiting adversaries. He urged the public to call for an end to these "disastrous" tariff policies, warning that they could lead the country into a recession and do nothing to enhance the American economy or security.
