Mohammed Siraj Reflects on Champions Trophy Snub
Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj recently shared his thoughts on being left out of the national squad for the Champions Trophy. Initially, he found it hard to accept his exclusion, especially after being part of the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024 squads. The team management made the decision to go with five spin bowlers for the matches held in Dubai, which led to Siraj’s omission from the tournament.
Although he was named as a non-travelling reserve, Siraj didn’t get a chance to play as India went on to win the tournament without needing him. Speaking before his first match with the Gujarat Titans, Siraj expressed that playing for India boosts his confidence.
He mentioned, “When you represent your country, it gives you a lot of confidence. Every international player aims to participate in ICC events.” Siraj understood that team captain Rohit Sharma and the management made choices based on what they believed was best for the team.
“At first, it was tough for me to digest not being part of the squad. I have full faith in Rohit bhai; he always has the team’s best interests at heart. With his vast experience, he knew that pace bowlers might not be effective on that particular track, which is why they chose spinners over me,” he explained.
Working on Fitness During the Break
Following his exclusion, Siraj took the opportunity to focus on his fitness and improve his bowling. He noted that after playing continuously for a long time, it was easy to overlook mistakes in his game. However, he was thrilled to see India win the Champions Trophy.
“I had been playing non-stop for quite a while, so I utilized the break to enhance my physical fitness and my bowling skills. When you’re in the game, it’s often hard to see where you can improve. Overall, I’m glad it was a productive break for me and the team came out victorious in the Champions Trophy,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Siraj is optimistic about making a comeback for the upcoming England tour.
