US Open 2026: Carlos Alcaraz Powers Past Roman Safiullin, Signals Intent Early On

Carlos Alcaraz Makes Strong Comeback at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz marked his return to Grand Slam singles with an impressive win at the US Open, successfully beginning his title defense against Roman Safiullin. The young Spaniard, playing his first singles match in over four months due to a wrist injury, won the match in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.

A Long-Awaited Comeback

Alcaraz had not played singles since April and missed both the French Open and Wimbledon because of his injury. He also chose not to compete in the Cincinnati Open, leaving many uncertain about his form entering the tournament in New York. However, as the second seed, Alcaraz quickly displayed his well-known aggressive style and quick movements, proving that his long break had not dulled his skills.

The victory further solidified Alcaraz’s impressive track record at the US Open, where he entered with a 24-3 match record. After winning the title in both 2022 and 2025, he is now aiming for his eighth Grand Slam trophy.

Alcaraz also brought some energy from his experience in mixed doubles, where he partnered with Serena Williams earlier in the tournament. Yet, as he noted, the intensity of a singles match is hard to replicate, especially when facing an opponent who had previously beat him on hard courts this year.

Expressing Gratitude for a Special Return

After his win, Alcaraz shared his feelings: “It has been a really tough four or five months for me. To be back at the US Open and competing again is special. I missed the crowd and the competition. This tournament means a lot to me.”

Finding His Groove Against Safiullin

In the match, Alcaraz had to navigate a tricky start, with Safiullin pushing him early on. The Russian created break-point chances, but Alcaraz’s strong serve and powerful forehand helped him stay in control. He faced pressure at 3-3 but made a critical break at 4-3, finishing off the first set at 6-4 after Safiullin hit a backhand error.

The second set posed its own challenges, with Safiullin taking an early lead. Yet, Alcaraz quickly responded, breaking back and winning the set 6-4.

The third set followed a similar pattern, with Alcaraz showcasing his resilience by saving three break points early on. After breaking Safiullin at 3-1, he maintained his steady lead without letting his opponent stage a comeback.

Alcaraz’s ability to handle pressure and shift from defense to offense was quite impressive, especially as he found his rhythm throughout the match, mixing powerful forehands with quick movement and smart shot placement.

The straight-sets victory marks Alcaraz’s eighth consecutive win at the US Open and establishes him as a key contender in a men’s draw that has already seen upsets, including the first-round exit of Novak Djokovic.
