Veteran actor Rakesh Pandey, renowned for his work in Hindi and Bhojpuri films, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 77. He died from a cardiac arrest at 8:50 AM in the ICU of Arogyanidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, daughter Jasmeet, and a granddaughter. His last rites were conducted at the Shastri Nagar crematorium, attended by family and close friends.
Rakesh Pandey made his mark in Indian cinema with his debut in the 1969 classic film Sara Akash, directed by Basu Chatterjee. This role showcased his talent and earned him the President’s Award. After receiving training at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, he also honed his skills at the Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts. His early involvement with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) further helped shape his acting style, which was characterized by natural realism.
During his prolific career, Rakesh Pandey developed a rich filmography, successfully taking on diverse roles in both mainstream and regional cinema. In Hindi films, he appeared in notable movies such as Mera Rakshak, Yehi Hai Zindagi, Woh Main Nahin, Do Raha, and Eeshwar. He also made a mark in Bhojpuri cinema with films like Balam Pardesiya and Bhaiya Dooj, where he portrayed characters with depth and authenticity. His later work included significant roles in Bollywood films like Devdas (2002), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Lakshya (2004), and Black (2005).
Apart from films, Rakesh Pandey had a strong presence on television, featuring in popular shows such as Chotti Bahu, Dehleez, and the historical series Bharat Ek Khoj (1988). After a two-decade hiatus, he made a memorable return to acting in 2017 with a role in Kapil Sharma’s Firangi, reigniting his passion for the craft. Recently, he continued to work actively, appearing in the film Hurdang (2022) and the web series The Lawyers Show.
Rakesh Pandey’s legacy is marked by his ability to create relatable and heartfelt characters. His contributions to Indian cinema, especially in promoting family-oriented and culturally rich stories, are greatly valued. His dedication and talent have left a lasting impression on audiences and the film industry.
