As the anticipation for his upcoming Hindi film Sikandar, featuring Salman Khan, builds, celebrated director AR Murugadoss has stirred excitement among movie fans by providing updates about the much-talked-about sequel to his 2008 hit, Ghajini. In a recent interview, he addressed the ongoing buzz regarding Ghajini 2, especially after producer Allu Aravind expressed his wishes to continue the beloved franchise.
The original Ghajini, which starred Suriya in Tamil in 2005, was remade in Hindi with Aamir Khan in 2008. It became a significant milestone as the first Bollywood film to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the box office. There are reports suggesting that Ghajini 2 may be a bilingual venture, filmed simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, with both Suriya and Aamir Khan possibly reprising their iconic roles.
When asked about the future of Ghajini 2, Murugadoss revealed, “We have some ideas. Right now, we all are busy with our respective projects. Once we get a chance, we will sit down and discuss.”
In addition, the discussion turned to Murugadoss’s recent interactions with Aamir Khan since the speculation about Ghajini 2 took off. Murugadoss shared details of his meeting with Aamir, stating, “When I came to Mumbai, I met him before I started shooting Sikandar. We talked on the sets of Sitaare Zameen Par, and after that, we often chatted over the phone.” This exchange has raised fans’ hopes that the groundwork for the sequel might be in the works, although Murugadoss did not reveal any specifics about what they discussed. Nonetheless, his comments hint that the beloved Ghajini saga could soon return to the big screen, reuniting Aamir Khan and Suriya under his direction.
On another note, Ghajini is among several films featuring Aamir Khan that are being re-released to celebrate his contributions to Indian cinema. Murugadoss added, “Now the trend of re-releases has started, so many old hit films come back around the hero’s birthday or holidays.”
While the curiosity surrounding Ghajini 2 continues, Murugadoss is presently focused on launching Sikandar, his first collaboration with Salman Khan, which is set to release in theatres on March 30, 2025. The film, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, also features Rashmika Mandanna and has already piqued interest with its thrilling teaser and music.
