In an exciting turn of events, renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta and producer Sahil Saigal are collaborating to create the official Hindi version of the popular Sri Lankan comedy, Tentigo (originally titled Nelum Kuluna). This adaptation will be produced under their new production company, True Story Films, which was established earlier this year.
Tentigo first came into the spotlight in 2023 when it premiered at the esteemed Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award. The film was produced by Hiranya Perera and the well-known indie team at Crawling Angel Films, recognized for their previous hits. True Story Films will work alongside Crawling Angel Films, with Sanjay Gulati and Neeraj Pandey joining forces for this Hindi remake.
Bringing a unique flair to the project, celebrated casting director Mukesh Chhabra is stepping into the role of producer for the first time. Hiranya Perera will serve as the Associate Producer. The script will be adapted into Hindi by Karan Vyas, a three-time Filmfare Award winner known for his work on Scam 1992, Scam 2003, and Scoop. He aims to deliver a fresh and engaging take on the comedy that is both entertaining and emotionally resonant.
The announcement for this exciting project took place at the Tentigo premiere in Colombo on March 12, 2025, where the entire creative team was present. The film officially released in theaters on March 14, 2025, receiving excellent reviews from critics and audiences alike, creating buzz for the upcoming Hindi adaptation.
Hansal Mehta expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I usually shy away from remakes, but this one truly captured my attention. Watching Tentigo had me laughing nonstop. It’s sharp, humorous, and has a deep emotional core that stays with you. I believe this new version will connect with people across India. We are eager to share this wonderfully funny film with a larger audience.”
Mukesh Chhabra, who has collaborated with Mehta since Shahid, also shared his excitement: “Working with Hansal has been a great experience on all his projects, and becoming a producer alongside him feels like a natural progression. I look forward to this new chapter and can’t wait for everyone to see this film.”
Sanjay Gulati from Crawling Angel Films noted that many films he has worked with have had festival premieres but often went unnoticed by the general public. He believes that Tentigo, being a comedy, breaks the mold and is gaining popularity beyond its festival roots. He hopes the adaptation reaches a wider audience through this collaboration with True Story Films and Hansal Mehta.
While the details about the directorial team and the cast remain undisclosed, the producers assure there will be a talented lineup that will enhance this much-anticipated project.
