Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is excited to take on a new challenge in IPL 2025 as he aims to make his mark at the No. 3 batting position. After leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to a championship victory last season, Shreyas has joined Punjab Kings, who invested a hefty 26.75 crore rupees to bring him on board. The 30-year-old has primarily played in the middle order during his time with KKR.
Having made a strong impression while batting at No. 4 during the Champions Trophy, he is now looking forward to stepping up into a different role. In a press conference before the season kicked off, Shreyas expressed his determination to shine at the No. 3 spot, stating that he is confident about the position he wants to play.
"I know that IPL is a key part of Indian cricket. If I want to excel in T20, I see myself batting at number 3, and that’s my focus now. I’m not getting too caught up in whether or not I’m batting at that number," he said. "This time, I’m clear about my position, and I’m eager to focus on it, as long as the coach supports my decision."
An Opportunity for PBKS
Punjab Kings, despite being one of the prominent franchises, have yet to claim an IPL title. The team has struggled to maintain consistency over the years and has not reached the playoffs since 2014, experiencing frequent changes in coaches and captains.
Shreyas emphasized the importance of winning the trophy this season but noted that he doesn’t feel the weight of history on his shoulders. "Winning the trophy is what matters most. There’s no pressure about Punjab’s past failures in the IPL. I see this as a great opportunity," he shared.
The Punjab Kings are set to kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 25, and all eyes will be on Shreyas as he embarks on this new journey.
