Pakistan Faces Defeat Against New Zealand in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Opener
In their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan experienced a tough loss, falling short by 60 runs against New Zealand on February 19 at the National Stadium in Karachi. The home team struggled right from the start of their chase, finding themselves in a difficult position at 22 for 2 within the first ten overs. Ultimately, Pakistan was all out for 260 runs in just 47.2 overs, marking a rocky beginning to their title defense.
After the game, Pakistan’s captain, Mohammad Rizwan, expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to maintain momentum, pointing fingers at a pivotal partnership between Tom Latham and Will Young. He also noted that Fakhar Zaman’s unexpected absence from his usual batting slot hurt the team’s chances.
“We initially thought a total around 260 was reasonable after taking some early wickets, but they surprised us by scoring 320. The partnership between Latham and Young was key. We tried our best, but they played smart cricket, which is why they managed to set that target. The pitch was tricky to bat on at first, but their solid innings made a big difference. We didn’t execute our bowling well in the later overs, which allowed them to reach that score,” said Rizwan in his post-match comments.
Regarding Fakhar Zaman’s injury, he added, “We’re waiting for the scan results. We lost our rhythm twice during the match—first in the death overs and again in the powerplay. Losing Fakhar as an opener was significant. We didn’t want to feel pressured by being the defending champions. This game is behind us, and we need to focus on our next match.”
On the flip side, New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, acknowledged Pakistan’s good bowling during the middle overs and praised the contributions of Latham and Young. The pair added 118 runs together for the fourth wicket after New Zealand had stumbled to 73 for 3. Latham also combined with Glenn Phillips, contributing to a rapid 125-run partnership to boost their total to 320.
“Pakistan bowled well in the middle overs. However, Young and Latham effectively rotated the strike and picked up crucial boundaries, which laid a solid foundation. We were initially aiming for a total between 260 and 280, but it shows how much you can achieve when you have a solid base and wickets in hand. Our bowlers did an excellent job during the first 10 overs, and we maintained pressure throughout, leading to regular breakthroughs,” Santner remarked.
Tom Latham Named Player of the Match
After his stellar performance, Latham received the Player of the Match award. He acknowledged the efforts of his batting partners and noted that the dry conditions help spinners later in the game.
“It certainly helps when you have experience on a similar surface. It felt good to contribute, and Will Young played tremendously. Reaching 320 was a fantastic achievement. My focus when I came to bat was on building partnerships, and we managed to do that. Glenn Phillips also played a fantastic role in shifting the momentum. In the final overs, we aimed to maximize our score, and I’m pleased with how we performed. There was minimal dew today, which allowed the ball to turn, making it tougher for the batters in the second innings,” Latham shared.
As Pakistan looks to regroup, they will need to refocus and prepare for their upcoming matches in the tournament.
