Weekly Tech Recap: Major Updates in Technology

As new developments in the tech world come fast and furious, it can be tricky to keep up with the essential stories. To make it easier for readers, here’s a recap of five significant tech news highlights from the past week.

1. Samsung Galaxy S25 Series Unveiling

This week, Samsung kicked off its Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, announcing the launch of its new Galaxy S25 series. This series features three models: the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Although Samsung teased a sleek model named the Galaxy S25 Edge, the exact release date for this particular phone remains uncertain.

2. OpenAI Introduces AI Agents

OpenAI has ventured into the world of AI agents with the introduction of a beta version of its new assistant, known as Operator. This AI can perform tasks independently in the web browser, handling duties like navigating websites, downloading lectures, making grocery orders, and merging PDFs.

Operator utilizes a model called Computer-Using Agent (CUA) that combines the vision capabilities of GPT-4o with advanced reasoning abilities. OpenAI claims that CUA can break down complex tasks into manageable steps and adjust itself when encountering obstacles.

3. Zuckerberg’s Vision for Meta’s AI Future

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, shared his aspirations for the company’s AI development through 2025. He teased the upcoming large language model, Llama 4, which he assures will be cutting-edge. Zuckerberg’s goal is for Meta AI to reach over a billion users while reinforcing American leadership in technology.

In a post on Threads, he mentioned, “In ’25, we’ll bring online roughly 1GW of compute, and we’ll finish the year with over 1.3 million GPUs. We’re set to invest $60-65 billion in capital expenditures this year and expand our AI teams significantly. This is a colossal initiative that will enhance our core offerings and spur groundbreaking innovation.”

4. Testing Ads on Threads

Meta has initiated a trial run of advertisements on Threads, its social media platform designed to compete with X. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, announced on Friday that select brands in the U.S. and Japan are part of this initial test.

While Meta’s other platforms rely heavily on ads for revenue, the company had previously avoided this model on Threads to attract users migrating from X.

5. Potential TikTok Deal with Oracle and Microsoft

According to a report, plans are in the works to safeguard TikTok by having Oracle and a consortium of investors, including Microsoft, take control of the app. This strategy aims to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. while allowing ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to maintain a minority share.

Sources indicate that a discussion between White House officials and Oracle executives took place this past Friday, and another meeting is on the calendar for next week. This deal could potentially allow American investors to hold a majority stake in TikTok. However, specifics of the arrangement are still being negotiated and may change.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks!
