A Mumbai court has placed Shariful Islam Shehzad in police custody for five days. He was arrested after allegedly breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s home and injuring both him and his staff during a burglary attempt on Wednesday night. Shariful, a Bangladeshi national, was living in Mumbai under a fake identity. He was caught in Thane on Thursday morning, and in court, he insisted he is innocent and that he has been falsely accused.
Police reports state that Shariful entered India illegally and had been using the name Bijoy Das in Mumbai. They are now looking into how he managed to settle in the city and whether he had any accomplices. His target was the high-security area in Bandra, where Khan resides.
During the court session, law enforcement requested 14 days of custody for further questioning but were granted only five days. They revealed that Khan suffered six stab wounds during the incident, with one injury very close to his spine. A broken knife was found at the scene, and though one piece was retrieved from Khan’s body, another part is still missing. The police are also trying to locate the bloodstained clothes that Shariful allegedly concealed after the attack to gather further evidence.
In defense, Shariful’s lawyer, Dinesh Prajapati, argued that the case against him is unfounded and driven by Khan’s celebrity status. Prajapati mentioned that no concrete evidence has been presented to prove Shariful’s nationality as Bangladeshi and emphasized that his client is being wrongly targeted in this high-profile case.
