Explosions and Sirens Sound in Jerusalem Amid Ongoing Tensions
Jerusalem experienced a series of explosions on Saturday morning as sirens wailed across the city and central Israel. This alarming incident followed reports that a projectile was launched from Yemen, as stated by the Israeli military.
The blasts occurred shortly after Qatar announced that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas would start at 6:30 AM GMT on Sunday. Just before the explosions, the sirens began blaring in response to the projectile detected by the military.
Timely action by the military resulted in the interception of the incoming projectile. This is not the first time Houthi forces have targeted Israel; since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, they have launched several missile and drone attacks.
On Friday, the Houthis issued a warning, indicating they would continue their attacks if Israel failed to adhere to the ceasefire terms established with Hamas. These rebels, allied with Iran, have also targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea to express their support for the Palestinian cause.
In a past incident in December, an attack led to injuries for 16 individuals in Tel Aviv. In response to the Houthi threats, Israel has carried out airstrikes on Houthi locations, including targets in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
The situation remains sensitive as the region anticipates the implementation of the forthcoming ceasefire agreement.
