India’s Potential Champions Trophy Lineup: Bumrah In, Samson and Nair Left Out

On Saturday, January 18, India will announce its squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, an important eight-team 50-over cricket tournament. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the senior selection committee, will hold a press conference in the afternoon to share the names of the 15 players selected for the event. The tournament is scheduled to run from February 19 to March 9 and will take place in Pakistan and the UAE.

Ahead of the announcement, the selection committee plans to discuss the team lineup virtually with captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir on Friday evening, according to reports. The official selection meeting will start at 12 PM IST, with Agarkar expected to brief the media at 2 PM IST in Mumbai.

Big names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul are likely to be part of the squad. There is also speculation about Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion; however, his participation depends on his fitness. Bumrah recently experienced a back spasm during the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and was unable to bowl for the remaining two days of the match. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not provided detailed information about the injury, it’s understood that the selectors want Bumrah to play at least one competitive match before the tournament to evaluate his fitness.

In a light-hearted response, Bumrah dismissed reports suggesting that he needed bed rest following consultations with medical experts.

On another note, Karun Nair and Sanju Samson are not expected to make the Champions Trophy squad. Despite an impressive performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where Nair scored 752 runs in seven matches, selectors are hesitant to include him. Nair hasn’t played for India since 2017, and the team structure seemingly doesn’t provide him a spot in the current ODI lineup.

Similarly, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will likely miss out due to his choice to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy, opting instead to stay in Dubai during a training camp. He is, however, included in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against England starting January 22.

India last played ODIs in August 2024 against Sri Lanka, marking a challenging debut for coach Gautam Gambhir, as the team suffered a disappointing series defeat. As the selection committee finalizes the squad, all eyes will be on their decisions, especially given the Indian team’s struggles in recent matches, which have raised questions about team dynamics.
