PM Modi Launches Genome Sequencing Data for 10,000 Indians
NEW DELHI: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a significant achievement in biotechnology research by releasing the genome sequencing data from 10,000 Indian citizens. He marked this development as a crucial step forward in understanding the genetic diversity of the Indian population.
The data, known as Genome India Data, will be accessible to researchers through the Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC). In a video message shared at the Genomics Data Conclave hosted by the Department of Biotechnology, Modi expressed his belief that this initiative will play a major role in advancing research in biotechnology.
Modi explained that this national database aims to improve the treatment of genetic disorders and infectious diseases, support the creation of new medicines, and facilitate precision medical strategies. It will also enable research into the diverse ways of life within various Indian communities.
A genome includes the complete set of DNA within an organism, containing essential information needed for growth, development, and the ability to respond to environmental changes and illnesses. The primary goal of the Genome India project, which began in January 2020, is to create a detailed catalog of genetic variations among India’s population, emphasizing the country’s unique diversity across different regions and communities.
The Human Genome consists of approximately three billion base pairs found in the cells of our bodies. While the basic genetic sequences are almost the same across all humans, variations exist that make each individual unique. Whole-genome sequencing allows scientists to examine these variations, which can shed light on genetic disorders and even potential resistance to certain diseases.
As India steps forward in genetic research, this initiative is expected to open new avenues for medical advancements and enhance our understanding of health in relation to genetics.
