Rani Mukerji to Receive Honorary Degree at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has announced a special honor for renowned actress and humanitarian Rani Mukerji. She will be awarded the Honorary Doctor of Letters by La Trobe University during the festival’s 2026 celebrations.

The award ceremony is set for August 14, 2026, at Federation Square in Melbourne. This recognition highlights Rani Mukerji’s significant contributions to Indian cinema and her dedication to social causes, particularly those focusing on women, children, and disadvantaged communities.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, running from August 13 to 23, 2026, is recognized as a leading celebration of Indian cinema worldwide. The event brings together prominent figures from the Indian film industry and fosters cultural connections between India and Australia while showcasing impactful stories and talented artists.

With a career that spans nearly 30 years, Rani Mukerji is one of India’s most respected actors. She has delivered powerful performances in films like Black, No One Killed Jessica, Hichki, the Mardaani series, and Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Many of her roles focus on themes such as women’s rights and social justice, bringing important conversations to the forefront of mainstream cinema.

In addition to her film work, Rani is actively involved in humanitarian efforts, especially those aimed at improving children’s health, education, and community welfare.

Expressing her appreciation, Rani Mukerji shared, “I am truly honored to receive this Honorary Doctor of Letters from La Trobe University. Cinema has been a great teacher in my life, and I believe in its power to inspire change. To receive this honor during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, which highlights Indian cinema on the global stage, is particularly meaningful to me. I dedicate this recognition to my homeland, India, and to everyone whose support has allowed me to share these important stories through my work.”

La Trobe University Chancellor, John Brumby, commented on Rani’s achievements, saying, “Rani Mukerji’s body of work goes beyond entertainment; it initiates crucial conversations about social justice and equality. Her dedication to humanitarian causes makes her a deserving recipient of this honorary degree.”

Mitu Bhowmick Lange, Festival Director of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, also praised Rani’s contributions, stating, “We are proud to honor Rani Mukerji during this festival. Her performances have consistently showcased artistic excellence and strong storytelling, inspiring audiences around the world.”
