India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, spoke out about the on-field tension between Jasprit Bumrah and young Australian player Sam Konstas during the first day of the Sydney Test. Rohit emphasized that such unnecessary banter does not reflect well on the players. The rivalry began during the MCG Test when Konstas targeted Bumrah aggressively, but the Indian bowler got back at him in the second innings by dismissing him.
The conflict continued in Sydney, where an incident occurred during the last over of Day 1. Bumrah responded to the situation by taking the wicket of Usman Khawaja and then teasing the young opener. In an interview with Star Sports, Rohit defended his players, asserting that they usually stay composed, but constant provocation can lead to a different reaction.
Rohit stated that the Indian players maintain high standards and their focus is primarily on playing the game. He said, “Our boys stay calm as long as they’re not provoked. If the opponents keep poking them, it’s only natural that they won’t always keep their cool. We play cricket; this unnecessary talk does not suit anyone. Our players are classy, and we concentrate on our responsibilities.”
In addition, Rohit praised Bumrah for his exceptional performance and leadership during the match, highlighting his growth as a player since their first encounter in 2013. “The way Bumrah sets the bar with his bowling is truly remarkable. Since I first saw him in 2013, he has consistently improved and shows strength in his game,” Rohit remarked.
Konstas’ time at the crease was short-lived on Day 2 as he was dismissed for just 23 runs by Mohammed Siraj.
